Is a Gift or Stipend to a Volunteer Taxable Income?

Is a gift or stipend to a volunteer taxable income? Our PowerChurch Plus and Church Accounting Specialist breaks down whether a gift or stipend to a volunteer is taxable income.

Volunteers are the lifeblood of churches. It is wonderful to celebrate their gift of time, but remember the best gifts are given tax-free!

Avoid cash and its equivalents (gift cards, gift certificates or prepaid credit cards) and focus on more creative low-cost options. Clergy can host a volunteer banquet, purchase a plaque, or even a gift basket with small tokens of appreciation, but non-cash gifts are non-taxable ways to honor your volunteers.
